In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was been argued that cities can have an important role in reaching them as many of the activities under the SDGs fall under the responsibility of local authorities. Also, cites are home to more than half of the world’s population, they consume vast amounts of energy and many sustainability problems find their origin partly in them.
Many cities worldwide are developing smart cities programmes, managed by Smart Cities Programme Offices (SCPOs), to test and adopt technology with different objectives e.g. increase efficiency, improve work practices and better citizens engagement. Part of the project portfolio of many SCPOs is comprised of projects that address SDGs at local level.
